Thinking Of Mother's Day
If you're looking for peace and quiet, run out of earshot of my house at about 3:30 each afternoon. That's about the time the school bus reunites my eleven year old, Jake, with his fast friend and two and a half year old brother, Ben. That's when terrible two meets tween in a mix that I find both maddening and magical. Especially when I consider what it took to bring these two brothers together, and to make us all one family. See, I'm just the latest one lucky enough to be mother to my boys. Back in 1997, a lovely group of ladies in Russia were doing their best to take care of Jake and so many other orphans in need of forever families. That mothering made a difference in the first six months of his life after his birth mother delivered him to them as a newborn. About ten years later, another special lady opened her heart and home to another orphaned baby in Guatemala City. For the first sixteen months of his life, she gave him the hugs and help he needed to grow up to be my healthy, chatty two year old. Beyond providing care, teams of women around the world also helped guide us through the legalities that come along with adoptions. Back in November, two more motherly types stepped in for my boys. Including Travis County District Judge Jeanne Meurer who presided over a special double adoption ceremony that provided my boys with brand new Travis County Birth Certificates late last year. As we prepare to celebrate Mother's Day, I'm busy thinking of all those mom-types that followed their hearts to help my boys before I could actually call myself a mother.
