Remembering Texas Soldiers

Timothy W. Cunningham of College Station died on April 23rd. The Army First Lieutenant was wounded when a vehicle he was in rolled over in Golden Hills, Iraq. Cunningham was 26 and he leaves behind his wife, daughter and his parents. Military officials are still investigating the wreck. Cunningham graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in May 2006. He was with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His funeral was May 1st in Pearland, Texas. Specialist David McCormick of Fresno, Texas died April 28th in Baghdad. He had been wounded in a rocket attack. McCormick was also 26 and also with the 101st Airborne. He joined the Army in 2004, the same day as his brother, Leo, who remembers that David was quick to cheer up a friend or squad mate who was down. David McCormick was on his second tour of duty in Iraq and had just been accepted to Texas State University as a business major. His family is still making funeral arrangements. Mark A. Stone died April 28th from wounds he received when his unit came under attack in Baghdad. Sergeant Stone was 22. He was originally from Buchanan Dam and went to high school in Kingsland. Stone had served an earlier tour of duty in Afghanistan. He had already earned the Purple Heart. Plans for his memorial service are still pending. Staff Sergeant Clay A. Craig of Mesquite died April 29th from wounds he received in combat. He was 22 and had a wife and a daughter. Craig was also assigned to the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He joined the Army in 2003 and had served a previous tour of duty in Iraq. The Department of Defense confirms that as of May 1st, 4,064 U.S. service members have died since the war in Iraq began. 318 were from Texas.
