Oil, Oil Everywhere

The governor says Texas' cattle industry and Texans' grocery bills are being pinched by the diversion of corn from food to ethanol production. Ethanol is just one of the alternative fuels touted in calls for the U.S. to become energy "independent." Austinite and author Robert Bryce is a fellow with the Institute for Energy Research, which advocates a free-market approach to energy and climate problems. He calls energy independence a "dangerous delusion." Robert Bryce is the author of Gusher of Lies: The Dangerous Delusions of Energy Independence.
Tibetan Monks Visiting Austin
The monks are speaking about marches last month in Lhasa, where thousands turned out to mark the anniversary of China's takeover in 1951. When some protests turned violent, China cracked down. Reports from Tibet claim China has imprisoned hundreds of monks. China sentenced several to life in prison this week. Lobsong Wangchuk spoke for the monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery. "Tibetans would like their country back – there were no Chinese in Tibet before the 50's, now China is saying they were there, but there weren't Chinese there before then, so we would like people to become aware of that and to do something about helping the Tibetan people that are trapped in Tibet," said Wangchuk. China accuses the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual and political leader, of orchestrating the violence to interfere with the Beijing Olympics that start in August. Lobsong Wangchuk said his group hopes the world community will pressure China to meet with the Dalai Lama. "Tibetan Leaders said they can live under Chinese rule, but they want to have their Buddhist and cultural society back. Out of 5,000 monasteries, maybe 6 are left – all the rest have been destroyed, every 3rd person in Tibet was a monk or nun. All of Tibetan culture was Buddhism, and you can't even practice Buddhism in Tibet today, it's been outlawed," said Wangchuk. The monks are in town through May 9. Click here for more information.
