About Our Hosts

James Anglin
Dave Burnstein
Sarah Bush
Kory Cook
In Austin since: 1995

Favorite thing(s) about Austin: Music, tex-mex food, heat heat heat.

If I had more time, I would...: Write a 7-piece suite for brass orchestra and percussion, theme still unknown.

Work/on-air history:
I've been involved in radio since 1992 when I was a freshman in college. I started in public radio as host of a nightly jazz show, and also spent seven years as a news and traffic reporter, anchoring spots and reporting from a 1957 Cessna -- which resembled a tin can -- high above Austin. In 2002, I got back into public radio for KUT. In addition to my position as Assistant Music Director at KUT, I host overnight, afternoon, and most other time slots for our primary hosts who need a break.

How I choose the music I play during my show:
Whether it's rock, pop, jazz, blues, soul, or any other genre, I look for original artists who tend to write their own distinct material. Throw a little dirt on it for honesty, and I'm sold.

What I do when I'm not on air:
I perform as a drummer in local bands including Texas garage-rock kings Sons of Hercules, all-star soul revue Bloody Tears, and various small jazz combos.

A few of my key artists:
The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers Nino Moschella, The Fix Trio Beyond (DeJohnette, Scofield, Goldings), Saudades Sam Cooke, Best of

I'm telling all my friends about:
My current obsession is the Kashmere Stage Band out of Houston, TX. A new release -- Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974 -- showcases the band's enormous talent under the direction of Conrad Johnson. They smoked every stage band they came in competition with across the state. James Brown would be proud to have Kashmere backing him up.

Top 5 favorite or influential records:
Chuck Berry, Great Twenty Eight: The disputed king of rock-n-roll. I heard this album in the 3rd grade, memorized every lyric and lick, and still swear by it. Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention, all recordings: The phenomenal Zappa has more recordings and compositions under his belt than any other American rock-n-roll artist, and they all sound different. He's also quite possibly the most underrated blues guitarist of all time. John Coltrane, A Love Supreme: A stunning, gorgeous, and unsurpassed display of modern jazz perfection. Charles Mingus, all recordings: An intense bandleader that wove a highly distinct sound together with chosen bandmates who stayed with him until the end. Richard Hell, Blank Generation: Hell founded NYC's Television with Tom Verlaine in 1974. Hell was one of the first punks to shred his clothes and sneer songs of drugs, lust, and self-regret.

Work/on-air history:
David Brown is the founding producer of Texas Music Matters, KUT's cultural journalism unit. He's an award-winning public-radio producer and reporter, former host of Marketplace, and a much better motorcyclist than bass player. Brown is also an attorney and a lifelong student, currently working on his PhD in Journalism at the University of Texas where his research centers on new media.
