Braised in Texas

Braised in Texas

The new show Braised in Texas mixes a love of documentaries (both real and mock) with a love of Texas culture and characters. It’s inspired by documentaries such as Hands on a Hard Body and mockumentaries like those made by Christopher Guest. The weekly improvised play centers around a BBQ competition and the characters who compete in it and it’s improvised in a mockumentary style. That means that characters will speak directly to the audience, there’s a narrator, and actors generally create a story arc for one character rather than playing multiple roles.

Poetry Cartoon: “The Love of a Pet”

Poetry Cartoon: “The Love of a Pet”

April was National Poetry Month, but we’re still not done celebrating around here. We had a blast recording the poetry of Kealing Middle School’s Blank Page program, and just airing them on the radio didn’t seem like quite enough.

So here’s an animated version of “The Love of a Pet,” written by Sierra and read by Zell Miller III:

KUT’s Michael Lee handled the cartooning, and the music or this piece is Benny Goodman’s “Airmail Special,” recorded by Ben Saffer, Erik Hokkanen, Red Young, Roscoe Beck, and Brannen Temple live at the Cactus Café during a recent Views and Brews show.
