AUSTIN MUSIC MINUTE

Hosted by Laurie Gallardo

About the Show

KUT’s Austin Music Minute is a daily quick guide to Austin’s musicians and bands. Each installment offers up a sound bite of the artist’s music along with a connection to websites and shows. Since the Austin Music Minute’s beginning in May 2001, it has spread the word about hundreds of acts highlighting new CDs, events and other interesting notes – in quick, one-minutes hits.

If you’d like to contribute to the show, send notices about Austin & Central Texas music events to Lauri Gallardo. Remember, in order to give KUT listeners a preview of your music, we’ll need a music sample.

Catch the Austin Music Minute weekdays at 7:50 a.m., 1:45 p.m., and 3:04 p.m.

The podcast is updated daily, Monday through Friday.

About Our Host

Laurie Gallardo
In Austin since: March 2001

Favorite thing(s) about Austin: The support from my friends and colleagues. Wow. What a great support system!

If I had more time, I would...: Slow down.

Work/on-air history:
Public radio began for me in my hometown, El Paso, Texas, where I worked as an announcer at KTEP 88.5 FM. Here at KUT, I've since taken on new duties, including the Austin Music Minute and Radio Without Borders. I'm now a part of the fabulous Texas Music Matters posse, through which I'll resume producing Before the Break. You can hear my voice on underwriting throughout the day, and I also sit in for Bob Branson during the afternoon shift, on occasion. Outside of the radio station, I'm a voiceover artist. I've provided voice talent for commercials and educational materials, and I've done character voices for English translations of anime for ADV Films. I also sing for a band called The Platforms.

How I choose the music I play during my show:
When I conduct interviews with artists and musicians, I usually let them do the talking. It's obvious I'm not a music writer or critic. I just let the artist do the talking and let them describe what they do, or how they feel about it.

What I do when I'm not on air: I can never read enough books. Read, people. Read often.

A few of my key artists:
Lately, in my car, I've been listening to The Helio Sequence, Experimental Aircraft, Black Sabbath, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Betty Davis, {{{SUNSET}}}, and of course, somehow, somewhere, I slip in practically anything by Tom Waits.

I'm telling all my friends about: There are so many local artists that I can't possibly list them all.

Top 5 favorite or influential records:
I must emphasize that there's no way I could narrow down the musicians or albums that changed my life to a measley list of five. Instead, I'll say that music has always influenced my life. Period. Get over it.
