About the Show
Taking its name from the Spanish and Portugese word for horizons, the mission of Horizontes is to explore the realm of Latin music. The show begins in Brazil with bossa novas, sambas, forro, and MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira), uniquely Brazilian pop music. From there, the show winds its way through the tangos, candombes, milongas, chamames, and zambas of Uruguay and Argentina and then explores some of the music of the Andean mountain regions of Chile, Peru, and Ecuador and the coastal African-influenced music of Peru and Colombia. Next on the journey are the accordion vallenatos of Colombia and the musica llanera of Venezuela. The exploration ends on the islands of the Spanish Caribbean with the son and guaguanco of Cuba, the merengue and bachata of the Dominican Republic, the bomba and plena of Puerto Rico and the spicy mix of all of these Spanish Caribbean styles known today as Salsa.
About Our Host
Michael Crockett
In Austin since:
1972
Favorite thing(s) about Austin:
It feels like a cosmopolitan: a culturally diverse, world-class city while at the same time feeling like a friendly, small Texas town.
If I had more time, I would...:
Travel more and read more.
Work/on-air history:
I have hosted Horizontes for KUT-FM since 1988 -- nearly 20 years. (The show has been broadcast on KUT-FM since 1975, over 30 years!) I started out in radio at KUT-FM as a UT student in the early 1980s and even hosted Folkways briefly. I have often been a substitute host on the World Music Show, which I will be hosting regularly starting this Fall.
How I choose the music I play during my show:
I pick the music for my shows by looking for contemporary samples of music from all of the countries of Latin America. I prefer that the music, while contemporary, have elements of the traditional musics of the country.
What I do when I'm not on air:
When not on the air, I work in other areas of music to make a living. I spend my free time playing music, going out dancing, reading, and traveling, mostly back to Latin America.
A few of my key artists:
Favorite songs of the year so far:
1.Raul Paz (Cuba) "Mua, Mua, Mua"
2.Andy Montanez (Puerto Rico) "Se Le Ve" (w/Daddy Yankee)
3. Novalima (Peru) "Alcajazz"
4. Marcelo D2 (Brazil) "A Procura Da Batida Perfeita"
5.Gotan Project (Argentina) "Notas" (w/Juan Carlos Caceres)
6.Nina Pastori (Spain) "Burbuja De Amor"
7. Apollo Nove (Brazil) "Inexplicata"
8. Fonseca (Colombia) "Viene Subiendo"
9. Daniela Mercury (Brazil) "Quero Ver O Mundo Sambar"
10.Lenine (Brazil) "Jack Soul Brasileiro"
I'm telling all my friends about:
Jorge Drexler, Eco. I love every song on this CD from the Urugayan songwriter. It was released after he won the 2005 Oscar for Best Song in the movie "The Motorcycle Diaries."
Top 5 favorite or influential records:
1.Sergio Mendes: My parents played his records in our house when I was a kid and that's when my love for Bossa Nova began.
2.Milton Nascimento: I rediscovered Brazilian music and learned Portuguese after hearing this singer's beautiful voice.
3.Eddie Palmieri: When I heard this guy beat the piano like a conga drum with those McCoy Tyner-like big chords, I became a fan of Salsa forever.
4.Inti-Illimani: The most innovative of all the bands that emerged from the Andean countries during the Nueva Cancion movement of the 1970s.
5.Caetano Veloso: Besides Antonio Carlos Jobim, this singer-songwriter is, for me, the most influential musician in Brazilian popular music.
