eclec-tic \e-’klek-tik\ adj [Gk eklektikos fr. eklegein to select, fr. ex + legein to gather – more at LEGEND] (1683) 1 : selecting what appears to be the best in various doctrines, methods, or styles 2 : composed of elements drawn from various sources 3 : KUT’s weekday music and talk show with host John Aielli
Eklektikos began in the early 1970s, making it one of KUT’s longest-running programs. Host John Aielli has been at the helm since its inception, entertaining and engaging listeners with a mix of music that leaps across almost all musical genres. On any given day, during any given hour, listeners can hear a sampling from an infinite variety of musical sources.
Don’t forget to tune into John Aielli’s other show Aielli Unleashed.
John Aielli came to U.T. as a student in 1966 and started as a part-time on-air host at KUT. By 1970, he was a full-time host and had expanded his show's playlist beyond classical to include folk and jazz. He also made a conscious effort to support and provide an outlet for the local arts community. Eklektikos was born.
"I always wanted to expand classical music into a more generally-heard forum... I was also trying to get the classical people to lighten up and stop thinking that classical music is the only kind of music in the world and start listening to other things," he says. "I think there is room for all of it and all of it together, not in separate pockets."
John's now well-known for his broad musical tastes and is a beloved Austin institution. He has been honored many times by listeners in the Austin Chronicle's Reader's Poll: Best Radio DJ (2006), Best Morning Radio Host (1990-1992, 2001-2003), and Best Talk Radio Host (1996, 1998, and 2000).
