It’s been over nine years since the death of a great southern raconteur and one of the last genuine Texas troubadours.

Townes Van Zandt was a singer-songwriter born to wealth who cared nothing for it; a man who, by outward appearances often seemed happy, but who struggled with personal demons. Yet somehow, through it all, he managed to write songs of lasting beauty and profound emotional power.

KUT`s Texas Music Matters presents a special one hour documentary featuring rare interviews with Townes, conversations with musicians touched by his music, reflections from those who knew him intimately, and Townes` most influential songs – including some rare live performances.

The rare live interview segments with Townes Van Zandt featured in our special were recorded in a series of intimate interviews by KUT producer and DJ Larry Monroe. Portions of these interviews are taken from the CD entitled Documentary produced by Larry and soon to be made available to the public again in a reissue on the Sparrows Wheel label.

Sparrows Wheel is a unique enterprise in that it is a share-the-profit venture – owner Barbara Kooyman (of Timbuk3 fame) will be sharing proceeds from the sales record with KUT and other public radio stations and community activities such as Meals on Wheels. For more information, visit Sparrows Wheel.
