AUSTIN, Texas – March 30, 2007 – KUT 90.5 FM, Austin’s listener supported public radio station, raised $750,000 during its spring fundraiser, which started at 6 a.m., March 22 and concluded at 9 a.m. today following Morning Edition.
“More than 5,000 listeners pledged to KUT over the past eight days, including a 7-year-old listener who raised more than $300 from her lemonade stand,” said Stewart Vanderwilt, director and general manager of KUT Radio. “Having such a wide base of support from so many listeners gives KUT Radio the strength to be an independent source for news and music.”
This pledge drive marked two firsts for KUT. Paul Ray’s newly expanded Twine Time raised more than $12,500—a record for KUT’s Saturday night music block. And the station took the first step toward streamlining the pledge entry process by installing 10 computer terminals for volunteers to enter phone pledges, which were integrated with online pledges for nearly real-time tabulations of pledge results.
Two special KUT premiums were offered to donors this spring: a limited edition KUT Live Volume II CD featuring live performances in KUT’s Studio 1A from artists including Guy Clark, Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, KT Tunstall, James McMurtry, Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, Amos Lee and Calexico, among others; and tickets to the Eklektikos Live with John Aielli concert in the Austin City Limits studios.
As with every KUT Radio fundraiser, this was a community event with more than 400 volunteers answering phones from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day, and nearly 30 local restaurants donating food and beverages to sustain the volunteers.
More than 80 percent of KUT’s annual operating budget comes from listeners and local businesses.
