Former Democratic Texas Governor Ann Richards has died. She died in her Austin home after fighting esophageal cancer for months.
Richards will no doubt be remembered for the causes she championed. During her one and only term as Governor she appointed more women and minorities than any previous Texas governor. George W. Bush derailed Richards’ re-election shortly after she vetoed legislation that allowed Texans to carry concealed handguns.
Her electoral defeat did little to curb her work on social justice issues.
