KUT RADIO CELEBRATES NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
Local Celebrities to Participate in Poetry Series
AUSTIN, Texas — March 26, 2003 — KUT Radio 90.5 FM is celebrating National Poetry Month by airing contemporary American poems read by well-known Austinites throughout the month of April.
Readers include Betty Sue Flowers, director of the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum; Tim Green, professor of English at St. Edward’s University; Dr. Alan Gregory, professor at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest; Philip Bobbitt, University of Texas School of Law professor and author of The Shield of Achilles; and local actors Janelle Buchanan and David Stahl, among others.
“Not only do we try to be the most trusted and respected source for news in Central Texas,” said Stewart Vanderwilt, KUT’s director and general manager, “We strive to be a source for arts and culture throughout the region; collaborating with the community to deliver that information in an intelligent manner.”
Poems by fifteen contemporary American poets, including Stephen Dunn, Donald Justice, Mary Oliver and Mark Strand, will be featured on Eklektikos with John Aielli, which airs at 9 a.m. weekdays. The featured poems will run throughout the program and will be posted on the KUT Web site, KUT.org, along with additional poems by the selected poets.
The series is part of “Arts Eclectic,” a regular arts feature of KUT that spotlights happenings in the arts, theatre, film, visual arts and more around the Austin area. The poetry series is being co-produced by Austin writer Frances Schenkkan.
Established in 1996, National Poetry Month is sponsored by the Academy of American Poets and includes public readings throughout the country and many other events listed at www.poets.org.
