KUT MAKES HISTORY WITH PLEDGE EARLY, END EARLY SPRING FUND DRIVE

Station Thanks Listeners for Raising More Than $539,000 to Continue Tradition of Unique Programming

AUSTIN, Texas — After postponing its spring pledge drive to provide uninterrupted coverage of the war in Iraq, KUT 90.5 FM, Austin’s listener-supported public radio station, announced it raised $539,551 toward its annual operating budget in record time.

“In light of world events, the Easter holiday and the summer vacation season, we had a very small window in which to raise the funds we need to deliver our public service to listeners,” said Stewart Vanderwilt, KUT’s director and general manager.  “We decided to take a risk and try a ‘Pledge Early, End Early’ campaign in which we started at 6 a.m. Monday, April 21 and stopped as soon as we met our $535,000 goal — which happened to be at 6 p.m. during the ‘All Things Considered’ afternoon drive time on Friday, April 25.  The approach worked and listeners stepped up to the plate just under five days, which is a new record for KUT.”

Online pledges played a key role in the “Pledge Early, End Early” campaign.  Starting on March 10, online pledges through KUT’s Web site, www.kut.org, were counted toward the overall goal.  Approximately 1,622 pledges were made online totaling more than $149,200.

“We want to thank all of our listeners who contributed to our spring drive,” continued Vanderwilt.  “In this economy where almost all charitable giving and consumer spending is down, meeting our goal in record time underscores the value of KUT in our community.”

As with all KUT pledge drives, it was a community event with nearly 400 volunteers answering phones from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day, and close to 30 local restaurants donating food and beverages to keep the volunteers fed.  The next fund drive will take place in October.
