Austin, TX

What started as a small soup kitchen has grown into an important ministry that offers everything from health care to childcare for some of the most marginalized Austinites.

El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission is celebrating 20 years of community service. El Buen’s Executive Director Reverend Ed Gomez says the group picks up where other services end. Gomez told KUT that his clients typically need “documentation and access to health care… those are our big issues.” The mission’s funding comes from a mix of government support and donations from businesses and individuals.

El Buen plans to continue expanding the campus and envisions a gym for teaching yoga and salsa aerobics to pregnant moms. Fundraising is underway for a new facility and for more programs to help the working Hispanic community.
