KUT has won three regional Edward R. Murrow awards recognizing excellence in electronic journalism from the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA).
The KUT News documentary “Lost and Found at the Border” won the award for Best Documentary; Andy Uhler, from KUT’s Texas Music Matters, won Best Feature for his profile of legendary blues pianist Willie Joe “Pinetop” Perkins, whom many call the final surviving boogie-woogie blues master; and KUT news won its first award for Overall Excellence.
This brings to 52 the number of journalism awards that KUT News has earned since it launched in June 2002.
“Lost and Found at the Border” explored the national debate on immigration through the eyes of the people who are living it, the people arriving to and living in the United States illegally.
“Lost and Found at the Border” was produced and edited by Emily Donahue, and reported by Mose Buchele, Joy Diaz, Mincho Jacob, Matt Largey, Julie Moody and Ben Philpott. The program was produced in collaboration with Latino USA, KUT’s radio journal of Latino news and culture. Music for the special was composed by Brian Keane and Charles Reiser.
The documentary was produced with support from the William and Salome Scanlan Foundation of Austin and San Antonio, and The Brown Foundation of Houston.
Both “Lost and Found at the Border” and the Pinetop Perkins feature can be heard on the KUT Web site, www.kut.org.
The awards were in the Region 6 (Oklahoma, Texas) large market category. Regional winners automatically become eligible for the national awards competition, which will be judged in early June and presented in October at the RTNDA Awards Dinner in New York.
