Now a resident of Dripping Springs, TX, Samuel Beam, aka Iron and Wine, established his music career by releasing lo-fi cassette tapes in his native Florida. His first resolutely hi-fi recording was released on Sub Pop in 2004, resulting in a number of songs requested for films, including a Postal Service cover featured on the Garden State Soundtrack. The EP In the Reins with Calexico pushed Beam into even more appreciative territory, and this year’s The Shepherd’s Dog, recorded at his home in the hill country, is a splendid production of Beam’s creative output. Listen to Iron and Wine perform live on Music with Jay Trachtenberg.
