Live Fridays from XPN: Mutlu

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR bring you a live concert. This Friday, it's Mutlu.

Mutlu's music is a blend of soul, reggae, hip-hop, and Brazilian jazz deriving inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Bob Marley, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. He avoids falling into retro phonic traps with cool grooves and a quick wit. His songs feel foreign and familiar, risky and romantic. The worldly sound of Mutlu finds the groove that makes his thoughtful, clever lyrics dance. Fans outside his hometown of Philadelphia and music industry professionals got a taste of Mutlu's music during his well-received stint with Amos Lee on Lee's North American and UK tours. His performances ultimately caught the attention of Manhattan Records, which lead to the release of his 5-song EP produced by Amos Lee.

Mutlu recently toured with Joe Jackson and had the opportunity to open for...

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR bring you a live concert. On Friday, July 18, 2008 it was Robyn Hitchcock.

English singer-songwriter, Robyn Hitchcock has had one of the most enduring careers of any performer. With an impressive discography that boasts a stunning thirty-six releases, it is an understatement to suggest that he is dedicated to his music. Having performed as the front man of The Soft Boys for years, Hitchcock also worked as a musical perfectionist on his solo career. While his voice is somewhere between Syd Barrett and John Lennon, his sound is truly his own. Influenced by English folk rock, Hitchcock's lyrics are both whimsical and thoughtful. With the release of his second box set, Luminous Groove, Hitchcock reflects on his legendary career.

Live Fridays from XPN: Carly Simon & Yael Naim

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR bring you a live concert. On Friday, June 20, 2008, it was Carly Simon and Yael Naim.

With the success of two Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and her eternal hit "You're So Vain," Carly Simon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994. Twenty-three albums into her career, she released her personal yet eclectic twenty-fourth in April of this year. In her recent release, This Kind of Love, Simon experiments with rhythm, intentionally adopting the percussive liberation of Brazilian music. The highly anticipated release is Simon's first album of original songs in eight years. While she did write most of the music, she honored her children, Sally and Ben Taylor, by recording two songs that they had written ("When We're Together" and "Island" respectively). With gorgeous, sultry melodies and beautiful samb...

Live Fridays from XPN: James Hunter

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR bring you a live concert. On June 13, 2008 it was James Hunter.

James Hunter describes the long hours that went into his seemingly expedient rise to fame as "an overnight success that's taken 20 years." His debut album, People Gonna Talk, attracted an international audience and awarded him a Grammy nomination. Having opened for acts such as Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Etta James and Van Morrison, Hunter has come a long way from his beginnings on a London street corner.

In his latest work, The Hard Way, Hunter delves even deeper into his soulful genre, fusing his smoky voice with surf stylings. Reminiscent of American soul legends, Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, Hunter maintains a nostalgic perspective, with an updated style and technique of his own. He explains, "I'd just call it modern music done in a retro way."

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR bring you a live concert. On Friday, June 6, 2008 it was Langhorne Slim

Langhorne Slim (Sean Scolnick) is quite an unconventional folk and blues artist. Based in Brooklyn, and originally from PA, Slim's incredible skill at mixing elements of bluegrass, country, and blues has gained him quite a bit of recognition.

His rambling style won him a tour with The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players at the popular Bonnaroo Music Festival, which spread his music to a much larger audience. Before signing onto Kemado Records with his band the War Eagles in 2006, Alim released his album Electric Love Letter and When the Sun Goes Down (Narnack Records). His song "Electric Love Letter" became a hit, making it onto Rolling Stone's top ten picks and being featured in the movie Waitress.

Live Fridays From XPN: Danielia Cotton

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR bring you a live concert. On May 23, 2008, it was Danielia Cotton

Originally from Hopewell, New Jersey, and now based in New York, Danielia Cotton brings a very refreshing authenticity and reality to her work. As a child, she loved music and was very aware of her gift for singing. When she was 12 years old she joined the Brookes Ensemble Plus, a local gospel group, with her mother and that same year she began to play guitar. She was very inspired by the surrounding rock music scene, (including bands such as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones) as well as jazz/soul musicians such as Mavis Staples and Etta James. Her current style is a wonderful combination of the two.

Live Fridays from XPN: Black Kids & Does It Offend You, Yeah?

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., XPN in Philadelphia and NPR air a live performance. On Friday, May 16, 2008, it was Black Kids and Does It Offend You, Yeah?

Formed in 2006, Black Kids didn't take long to attract the attention of nationally known music blogs, backing up the praise with breakout performances at the Athens Popfest. The band's digital only Wizard of Ahhhs EP was a sleeper hit, marked by coed harmonies, layered keyboards, lo-fi guitars, and R&B-seasoned songs. "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You" was a U.K. chart hit and a sleeper here, helping the band land considerable press attention along the way.

As its name suggests, opening act Does It Offend You, Yeah? doesn't take itself terribly seriously: The British electro-rock band infuses its ambitious and chaotic music with bass slaps, cowbells, and signifiers of ‘80s pop, not to mention he...

Live Fridays From XPN: British Sea Power

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., NPR and WXPN in Philadelphia broadcast a live performance. On Friday, May 9 it's British Sea Power.

Formed in 2000, Brighton-based band British Sea Power's engaging and unique live performances define their early career. Dipped in reverb, their songs are full of jagged pop hooks and though they are often compared to bands such as The Cure and Joy Division, British Sea Power presents a style of their own: playful, logical, profound and defined by dazzling instrumentals. British Sea Power once again reigns over the seas, marking their international territory with the release of their third album Do You Like Rock Music?

Live Fridays from XPN: David Ford

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., NPR and WXPN in Philadelphia broadcast a live performance. On May 2, 2008, it was David Ford.

A mesmerizing stage presence and wonderful storytelling make this talented songwriter a must see, and must-hear, for new music enthusiasts.

Singer-songwriter David Ford debuted on the UK indie-rock scene with the band Easyworld. And when the band split in 2004, Ford quickly established a solo career with I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused the following year. The album has a distinctively raw quality and his sensible lyrics offer life lessons and an introspective look at the controversial inner workings of the government, business and media. His songs, while driven by their catchy acoustic melodies, are noted for poking fun at misery using irony. Ford continues to stylistically comment on the disappointments of everyday life, incorporating ...

Live Fridays from XPN: The B-52's

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., NPR and WXPN in Philadelphia broadcast a live performance. This week, it's The B-52's.

Formed in 1978 by Ricky Wilson, The B-52's are the epitome of the dance and surf vibe of the late ‘70s. Their first single "Rock Lobster" from their platinum debut album, was an underground success and quickly built their fan base. The band reemerged in 1988 with a newly revamped B-52's, and "Love Shack," their first song to hit the Top 40.

After 16 years out of the studio, The B-52s have just released Funplex last month. Funplex is a "loud, sexy, rock & roll" album, retaining that great B-52's vibe, with a little more electronica thrown in.

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., NPR and WXPN in Philadelphia broadcast a live performance. On Friday, April 18, 2008, it was Kate Nash.

British award winning pop singer-songwriter, Kate Nash became a widely popular artist in the UK last year and is quickly taking America by storm.

As a child she learned both piano and guitar, although Kate's original passion was acting. After pursuing acting as a career, she reverted to concentrating on a career in music. Playing various gigs and uploading her music online won her a great deal of attention, including from Lily Allen.

Nash's music took off like wildfire and spread through the internet and she signed onto independent label Moshi Moshi. Later signing with Fiction Records, where she released her pop single "Foundations" from the album Made of Bricks, the song hit Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart.
