Hip-Hop Theater at the Vortex

The folks of Xenogia Spoken Word Collectice - Da'Shade Moonbeam, LaLove Robinson, Enrique Cabrera, Zell Miller III, and Ebony Stewart - are set to premiere their debut full-length hip-hop theater piece, SPEAK, this weekend at the Vortex. Mixing hip-hop culture with a jazz aesthetic, SPEAK is a fast-paced show full of movement and spoken word. They'll take on a variety of subjects, including (but not limited to) homophobia, racism, sexism, and classism. True to the jazz aesthetic that informs their work, Xenobia never presents the same show twice. Game Show of the Arts

Starting January 31, The Greatness: Game Show of the Arts will take to the stage of the ND on the last Thursday of every month, bringing a healthy dose of competition to the worlds of the variety show and the arts showcase. Every month, artists will compete within genres (poets take on poets, comedians take on comedians, and belly dancers take on belly dancers) for the first portion of the show; the audience will then vote on who wins at, say, poetry, and the victors move on to the game show round. The three advancing artists will take on an audience member in a live game show that combines elements of The Price is Right and Remote Control, a winner will be crowned, and the evening will end with a dance party.
