Hello good people and welcome to the Friday podcast. We've got two little slices of radio pie for you today, both from a recent episode of the big big show. We'll kick things off with an episode of Saltcast, the show that later became HowSound. Both incarnations of this show feature an inside look at the glamor-filled world of radio production, and this particular installment is a pretty good one. It'll take you behind the scenes of "Ghetto Life 101," which is one of the greatest pieces of radio documentary we've ever heard.

And, in case that's not enough (even though it really should be), we'll bring you anther installment of Aengus "Aengus with an E" Anderson's motorcycle road trip opus Two Wheels to Nowhere.

Hey, you know what our host Hawk Mendenhall really likes? Riding bikes. You know what else he likes? His friends (he seems indifferent at best toward his co-workers, though).

That's why he recently devoted an entire O'Dark episode to talking about how much he loves riding bikes with his little friends. In between his going on and on about their annual Six Rivers bike ride, he also played handful of radio, and we're bringing you a few of those pieces on today's big podcast.

It's not all about bikes, though; Hawk opened the theme up to include motorized two-wheelers, too. So we've got two episodes of Two Wheels to Nowhere, the cool road-trip series from Aengus "Aengus with an E" Anderson for you. And sandwiched between those two episodes, we'll bring you Take a Seat from producer James Mills. It's a interview with Dominic Gill, who traveled from Alaska to South America on a tandem bicycle. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

We're podcasting live from the KUT Capital Campaign Command Center, which is the name I just came up with for the room where all the volunteers sit and answer phones during our current drive. We're in the last day of our special five-day Capital Campaign drive, raising the last bit of money we need to pay for the groovy new building we're about to move into. Or perhaps I should say the new building KUT is moving into -- we're still not sure if they're going to let O'Dark 30 into the new place.

Things are hopping in here; the coffee's brewing and our great volunteers are starting to take calls. But enough about all that. You're here for some hot podcast action, and we aim to deliver. We've got three pieces from our most recent episode, in which Hawk completely indulged himself and spent the entire three hours talking about his bike-riding friends. Fascinating stuff, if you're Hawk or one of Hawk's friends.

We'll start off with two, count 'em two, installments of Two Wheels to Nowhere, the cool road-tripping series from our buddy Aengus "Aengus with an E" Anderson. Aengus has an E and a motorcycle, and a couple of years ago he took them both on the road and created this great series.

And even though an hour's worth of Two Wheels should be plenty of show, we're not stopping there. We've also got a little something extra from Vermont Public Radio. It's How to Fix a Flat Bicycle Tire, which will be a big help to all of you who are downloading the podcast while stuck on the side of the road with a flat bicycle tire. O'Dark 30: entertaining and informative!

If you're anything like me (and I know I am), you love the O'Dark podcast so much that your only complaint is that there just isn't enough of it. Forty minutes or so, twice a week? That's nothing! So you'll be pleased to know that today's podcast is a jumbo edition, clocking in at just under 90 minutes. That's longer than some (really short) movies! And it's free, too!

This 'cast comes comprises a couple of pieces from our recent out-of-date holiday special, and includes celebrations of Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving. For Valentine's, we've got the "Sugar and Spice" episode of Snap Judgment. Snap's always great, and an episode that's all about love and/or heartbreak? Fantastic.

And for Thanksgiving... boy oh boy, I don't know how to prepare you guys for this one. You know how sometimes on O'Dark we bring you stuff that's completely wackadoo and you kind of dig it even though (or maybe because) it's from some bizarro radio planet? That's pretty much what's going on with Project: Devil Bird: An Electromatic Thanksgiving. Dig in!

We'll kick things off with The Jingle Cats, from producer Julie Bruins. You know those Christmas songs that feature the standards as sung by cats? Well, you don't really know them until you hear The Jingle Cats, which will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about singing cats and maybe just a little bit more. Would it surprise you to learn that the guy who created the singing cats craze owns nine cats himself? No, it probably wouldn't.

Then it's off to Halloween land, for something almost as scary as that first piece. It's Haunted Houses, Vampires, and Zombie Poets. Enjoy!

Hey, it's May Day! We're not really sure what that is, but it sounds like a heckuva good time, and we're kind of annoyed that we didn't get the day off to celebrate it.

Hopefully you're luckier than us, and heading out for a big May Day feast or decorating your Maypole or something fun like that. If so, once you've had your fill of May Day carols, please consider listening to this podcast. After all, we've spent all May Day morning putting it together for you, so listening is the least you could do.

We've got a spanking new edition of 99% Invisible for you today. And, as is usual for producer Roman Mars, he'll explore a topic in a way that most folks don't think of. This episode, "Undesigned," is all about the way our modern world was designed (or, as you might have guessed from the title, undesigned) to encourage the inefficient use of gasoline. Really interesting stuff.

And we've got something new from Aengus "Aengus with an e" Anderson. Usually, when we have something from Aengus with an e, it's part of series in which he travels the country on his motorcycle interviewing folks. This piece, The Forgotten River, is great but a little different -- it's a stand alone work, not part of series, and Aengus mentions riding his bicycle! Has he forsaken the motorcycle? Probably not.

It's the last podcast of the month, good people of the interwebs. That's the perfect time to reflect on the goings-on of the past few weeks, to weigh your wins and losses, to think about how you might have done things differently and what might have happened if you'd made better choices. Or you can just listen to this podcast and eat some cookies. Your call.

Here's what you'll get to go along with those cookies: a new edition of How Sound, the show that takes you behind the scenes of the radio production biz and a brand-new The Mikie Show, the show that aims to fill all your Mikie needs.

This episode of How Sound is "#9 - The Plane That Flew Into the Empire State Building;" in which host Rob Rosenthal talks with producer Joe Richman. You'll hear about Joe's process and his work on radio diaries, and then Joe and Rob dive into a fascinating exploration of the use of archival sound. Really cool stuff if you're curious about audio production, which of course you should be, because it's super-interesting.

Then it's The Mikie Show, full to popping with all the Mikie you could want or need. It's an extra-special edition of the show this week, because Mikie mikes it up with an actual Austinite on this one! Listen in for Mikie's interview with Ballet Austin's Michelle Thompson.

We've been bringing you a lot of How Sound lately, 'cause it's a cool, relatively new show that we're pretty fond of, and also because we know you love to get a little peak at the inner workings of the world's most exciting business, radio production. This episode of the program is "#11: The Longest, Shortest Time." It's a cool look at the work of producer Hillary Frank, from her earliest attempts at production to her current podcast. You'll hear about her apocalypse-obsessed ex-roommate, you'll hear about the primitive methods she used to produced her early pieces (with an answering machine and a boombox), and you'll hear about why she started doing radio again after some time away from the biz.

We'll close things out with an unusually sweet piece for O'Dark -- a youth-produced audio poem called To My Little Brother. Hey, we're not robots around here! We have hearts and emotions just like every one else.

I hope you weren't considering starting the weekend without first downloading the spanking new O'Dark podcast. That would be a disastrous idea, and we would be held responsible for anything that happened to you if you made that call. Instead, start the weekend the smart way, the O'Dark way, with this fine, absolutely free collection of audio.

We'll start things off with the latest in the semi-regular series Portrait of an Artist. This homegrown KUT original features local and touring artists of all types, and today's edition is a pretty good one. It's producer/bassist Roscoe Beck, who's famous for his work with Leonard Cohen and has lately become the unofficial house bassist for our Views and Brews program at the Cactus Café.

And that's not all! We know you love getting a peek behind the scenes of the glamorous and mysterious world of radio production, so we're bringing you another installment of How Sound. This week, you'll bet some insight on a piece called Leaving, which itself has been featured on the big big show. Pretty interesting stuff, if you're as into radio as we are.

So I was just thinking how crazy it is that Tax Day was always April 15 my entire life and now suddenly it's April 17 (which gives us all two extra days to file our extensions!) when I realized that it's only April 17 this year because April 15 was a Sunday and it's not really a big change or anything. And then I felt stupid and wrote about it on the internet where anybody can see it. Don't know why I'd do that.

Anyway, we've got a podcast for you! Today's 'cast features works from a couple of O'Dark stalwarts, Jake Warga and Julie Sabatier. Jake brings us Home From Africa, which follows Peace Corps volunteer Jenafir as she makes the difficult transition back to her old life after her time spent in Africa. Fascinating stuff.

Then it's the latest installment of Destination: DIY, from producer Julie Sabatier. This episode, "Gender Expression," asks the question "Can gender expression be a do-it-yourself project?" Good stuff as always from the DIY folks.
