Over the years, Chad Salvata has created several well-received contemporary operas for the Vortex. His works tends to involve elements of fantasy, elaborate costuming, and innovative lighting and set design. They also often include adult themes and nudity, however, which makes them inappropriate viewing for his nieces and nephews. To rectify that situation, he's spent the last couple of years crafting his latest work, Sarah Silver Hands. It's a dark faery tale designed for adults and kids alike, including all the things Austinites have come to know and love about his work except for the adult themes and nudity.

Directed by Bonnie Cullum, Sarah Silver Hands has been such a success that it's been held over for three more performances this weekend, so if you thought you'd missed the run of this show, you're in luck.

When girls enter Girls Rock Camp, they have one week to form bands, learn to play, write a song and perform in front of an audience. It's intense but fun, and Girls Rock Camp founder Emily Marks says if they can do that, they can do anything.

Now, to celebrate its first half decade, Girls Rock Camp is throwing themselves a party. In keeping with the mission of Girls Rock, it'll be a family friendly rock show, including performances from some of the girls themselves and a tribute to Miss Lavelle White. It'll all happen this Saturday, October 29, at Jo's Coffee on South Congress, and performers include Girls Rock Camp alumnae Schmillion, U-18 band Charlie Belle, Akina Adderley and the Vintage Playboys and the Shears.

<itunes:summary>This Friday night, the Austin Symphony Orchestra opens its pops concert season with a visit from Miami-based Latin music band Tiempo Libre. The Grammy-nomimated musicians of Tiempo Libre grew up in Cuba, where they learned about classical music by day and listened to traditional Cuban music by night. That mix of influences eventually led to the album Bach in Havana, which pairs the music of Johann Sebastian Bach with eleven different Latin rhythms.

Once Tiempo Libre came to the attention of conductor Peter Bay, it was only a matte of time before he brought them to town to perform with the Austin Symphony Orchestra. That concert will happen this Friday night at the Long Center. Recently, Horizontes host Michael Crockett talked with Bay and Tiempo Libre bandleader Jorge Gomez about Bach in Havana and the upcoming concert at the Long Center. Some of that interview made its way into this Arts Eclectic feature, and more can be heard on this week's Horizontes, which airs at 1:00 on Friday afternoon.</itunes:summary>

Dance Umbrella's 10 Minutes Max is an annual dance showcase with a long history. Started in 1989 as Performance Plus, the show has been a platform for new and veteran dancers and choreographers for more than two decades. The program consists of eight performances by both groups and soloists, each of which lasts no more than ten minutes (hence the title). It serves as an opportunity for artists to try out new material before an audience, often offering a sneak preview of what's in store for the next performance season.

Since the showcase includes talent from Austin and from around Texas, it also serves as a much-needed venue for choreographers and dancers from smaller communities that often don't have a regular place to perform. Now that novel has been published by Crown (a division of Random House) and it’s been met with good reviews and an appearance on the New York Times bestseller list.

It’s a geek-friendly story set in a future where the real world is bleak and the virtual world offers a much-needed respite from reality. After the architect of that virtual world (OASIS) dies, his fortune and his company become the prize in an elaborate online Easter egg hunt. In this virtual contest, knowledge of 1980s-era video games and pop culture (not coincidentally, the games and culture of which Cline himself is enamored) is key. “They tell you to write what you know,” Cline says, “and what I know about is being a huge nerd.”

Ready Player One is available in book and comic shops everywhere.

Once Ernie sold Ready Player One, he used to some of the money he made to purchase his nerd dream car, which also happens to be the car driven by the book’s protagonist. Here’s a look at that car, ECTO88.
