On this week's Spin This, Fleet Foxes raise the bar again with another stunning album, and the Beastie Boys return to form to teach the kids how it's done.
The meteoric rise of Seattle's Fleet Foxes is somewhat astounding given the time period. Their music is unabashedly antiquated, drawing from both choral and traditional folk traditions. The songs themselves are complex, employing multi-part harmonies and challenging melodies that are pretty hard to sing along to. Yet it's a testament to their skill that they're able to turn it all into big-tent pop: the group headlines festivals and they've rarely gotten a bad review in their short history.
Helplessness Blues, the group's second album, might just send them even higher into the stratosphere....

Explosions In The Sky—Take Care, Take Care, Take Care: You’d be forgiven in thinking that All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone would be Explosions In The Sky’s last album. The West Texas quartet toured triumphantly behind it, scoring prestigious dates at festivals around the world, a slot on Austin City Limits, and they conquered America’s hearts by soundtracking Friday Night Lights, both the movie and television series. And then--like their songs—a mighty crescendo gave way to a long silence. The group had trouble writing for their sixth album, eventually scrapping all of the work to start over, but the result is a back-to-basics record that revels in what they do best: constructing emotional symphonies of instrumental post-rock.
