Austin Music MinuteAva Luna Performs Tonight at The MohawkAva Luna takes a number of strides toward futuristic directions when it comes funk and soul. True, those two styles are the primary influence, the backbone, of what the New York City-based band creates. However, as familiar as some of the sounds and beats may be, this is nowhere near your dad's soul grooves of yester-year.
They have an extraordinary way of weaving hybrids of classic soul and funk sounds with more avant-garde noise punk and experimental stylings. And that makes perfect sense; Ava Luna frontman Carlos Hernandez grew up around lots of soul and R&B, being the son of a ‘70s New York soul DJ who also had a punk background. It all flows naturally into his songwriting and vocals.
