Jason Moran @ KUT 5/2/12

Since his first album as a bandleader in 1999, jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran has been considered one of the most innovative and skilled individuals in the business. Some have even gone so far as to call him "the future of jazz." But Moran hasn't always been the musician type. Apparently, the story goes that he started playing piano at the age of 6 - and hated it. It wasn't until he was 13 and heard Thelonious Monk's jazz classic "Round Midnight" that he really grew to appreciate the instrument. He returned to the piano with a new found passion, focusing his efforts on jazz instead of classical. I think it's safe to say that it's a good thing he heard that song when he did. Jason Moran recently penned original music to accompany performance artist Joan Jonas' piece The Shape, The Scent, The Feel of Things.
