Cold Specks is the stage name of Al Spx, a young Canadian singer who burst onto the scene last year with her single "Holland." Now living in London, Spx releases her debut album
I Predict a Grateful Expulsion today on label Arts & Crafts.
Labelled as "doom soul" by herself, Spx's songs are -- as might be expected -- gloomy. But there's a sublime quality to the darkness in the tracks on
Expulsion that sets Spx apart from contemporary female singers. Influenced from as distant places on the spectrum as gospel and shoegaze, she is pioneering a uniquely modern sound that speaks of good things to come.
