James Polk is about as decorated as Austin musicians get. After earning a B.A. in Music Education at Huston-Tillotson in the early 60s he moved to Elgin to teach band. After a hiatus from music in the early 70s Polk returned to music in a big way, serving as organist, pianist, writer, and arranger in the Ray Charles Orchestra. He moved back to Austin in the late 80s where he received a Master of Music at Southwest Texas State. Since then James polk has gone on to teach generations of Austin musicians. Austin alt-country band Li'l Cap'n Travis was born as a side project for guitarist Matt Kinsey, and never intended as anything more than that. But sure enough, the band found themselves sucked in by the unique sounds they created. A blend of 70's outlaw country and psychedelic pop-rock, the band's sound was honed in their raucous and chaotic live shows.
