Local quintet Hello Caller is something of a hidden gem in this city, except perhaps amongst the new-folk/indie-folk fans who also appreciate the artistry of Shakey Graves and Wild Child - both of whom, by the way, have a connection with Hello Caller. Wild Child cellist Sadie Wolfe previously played with the band, and Alejandro Rose-Garcia (Shakey Graves) provides some guest vocals on the title track of the band's soon-to-be-released debut full-length, Dark Twain.
A lot has been happening for this band that first caught my attention with their self-described “dark folk, jangle rock.” Dark Twain is already receiving national attention for its distinctive, melodic mystique. Their approach transcends expectations of what pop or indie folk is expected to sound like, using these impressive harmonies, chord progressions, multiple instruments and, overall, something a lot more ambitious and sophisticated.

There is a most striking face on the cover of A Church That Fits Our Needs, the second full-length release from North Carolina band Lost In the Trees. It looks more like a painting rather than a photograph, with an ethereal quality to it. The stare is haunted. She's beautiful.
It is the mother of frontman and vocalist Ari Picker. Later in life, she had been battling cancer. In 2009, not long after Picker's wedding, she took her own life. However, rather than completely lose himself in despair, Picker decided to pay tribute to her as he sat down to compose the music for the album, with this very photograph before him, at his desk.
