It's an experience seeing a
Whiskey Shivers show. That, my friends, is putting it mildly. I once chided to the crowds that the band's music is crazy; the fans,
crazier. This is not the show you sit down at. You need to keep up with the searing banjo, washboard, guitar and mad fiddle. And I do mean mad.
As legend has it (depending on whom you ask, or whoever's swiggin' from the whiskey bottle while telling you the story), the Austin quintet got together back in 2009. The goal? To make music and have fun with it, and indeed, from that basic formula emerged an impressive set of original and traditional tunes done with superb musicianship and an almost maniacal enthusiasm. Ordinarily, you don’t typically find things like “roots music” and “hardcore” put together in the same sentence. Hardcore goes with punk, or rock, or hip-hop. But it's hardcore roots that Whiskey Shivers gives you, fast and furious, and...

Once again, your friendly neighborhood Austin Music Minute maven is a smitten kitten. Major kudos to Crooked Bangs for their awesome self-titled album, produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Heartless Bastards, And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead).
Initially, it was a description by a reviewer that got my attention, referring to the Austin-based trio as "spooky punks." And I admit that a band that lists inspirations like Georges Méliès and the distractedly random “werewolves on wheels” will draw me in even more. There's a broad mix of influences in the mix, ranging from rock to pop, punk, fuzz, surf - and no shortage of power chords. At the same time, there’s a simplicity that drives the music, a kind of restraint in the delivery that keeps it sharp.
