Of Montreal’s eleventh album
Paralytic Stalks was released back in February this year, and at first, I was sideswiped by its chaotic nature - not a bad thing at all, just something that left me reeling. They are, after all, a band known for its exploration of genres. Frontman and vocalist
Kevin Barnes plays with them all, reshapes them, mutates and redefines them to create an entirely different universe, on top of his penchant for pairing cheerful-sounding melodies with the darkest of lyrics and (thankfully) avoiding any hint of irony.
Which goes to show that
Paralytic Stalks shows Of Montreal doing what it does best. The album feels like a number of sensations hitting you at once – an unbelievable swirl of multiple instruments and almost indescribable sounds, while sending out vibes like
Bowie,
Prince,
ELO,...

It's an Austin Music Minute double treat today, featuring two of my local faves, Christy Hays and The Austin Steamers.

I've said before that The Austin Steamers deliver some of the best performances of original and traditional string-picking music with... » read more

I, your humble Austin Music Minute maven Laurie Gallardo, have to admit that Golden Bear is at the top of my list of favorite bands. They had me captivated with their debut self-titled album, released in 2006. And with each release after that (To The Farthest Star in 2007, and the EP Everest in...

As legend has it (depending on whom you ask, or whoever is telling the story), Austin quintet Whiskey Shivers formed around 2009. Some say they were hatched in a woodpile. Others say they tumbled out of one-a them rancid whiskey bottles and frightened the locals. But mostly, it was a talented bunch...
