It continues to blow me away. Austin-based songwriter
David Ramirez is 29. But his musical career spans more than a decade. Add to that a world-weary intensity and genuine emotion in his voice that reveal so much about his old soul.
You just…
feel it. Been to hell and back. Loved so deeply, only to have his heart delivered to him in barely-remaining shreds. And it seemed like a joke to try piecing it back together again. Forget the overly-sensitive whiner. This is the ultimate survivor.
Ramirez' second full-length,
Apologies, contains that very heartfelt intensity he’s known for, but applied toward a somewhat different perspective. He describes this album as one that's less about heartache and more about facing personal struggles and finally reaching a point of hope. It is an intensely personal album, sparse and beautifully composed. You get a rather distinct impression that...

I’ve raved about them before, and I'll probably do it again. Make way for the dirty blues-rock sounds of local trio The Black Owl Society.
Featuring drummer Charlie Jones, guitarist Nate Boff, and bassist/lead vocalist Buffalo, the BOS throws down a pretty mean roots jam, more toward the darker end of the twelve-bar boogie/rock ‘n’ roll spectrum, leaning a bit more on the rock side but chock full of grimy, gritty blues riffs. While there’s no doubt they get a lot of inspiration from Texas-style blues, their influences are a little broader and heavier. Collectively, the trio has an impressive resume, including Buffalo’s experience as an original member of... » read more

If I dwell upon it too much, I realize I'm not quite sure how one is supposed to toss around descriptions like "post-punk" or "post-wave." They don't really mean anything, do they? I tend to stick more to terms like "dark"...or maybe "angst-ridden." My favorite. A tad dramatic and gloomy, and right...

I honestly don't believe I've coined a phrase. I just know that great things often come in three's. This is in reference to me and my "triple bill" addiction. It's a rewarding experience. That's when there's a show going on in town that features not just one or two, but three of my favorite local...

It was an astounding question presented to me recently that raised the eyebrows and made my jaw drop. Perhaps it wasn't the question itself, but the fact that to this day, I still get asked this very question and it stops me dead in my tracks. I'll hear this: "So, are there any good shows...
