Truth be told, guitarist and vocalist Carley Wolf and hubs/band partner Jonny Wolf of The Ghost Wolves are some of the nicest, coolest people you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. And your humble Austin Music Minute maven is smitten over the band’s dashing mascot,Winter, who’s fluffy snow-white mug often appears on their show fliers and promotional photos with a toothy snarl. That would be the Ghost Wolf himself – but I’ve met him. And he’s snuggly. And he’ll sit on your feet, even though he’s bigger than a horse.

But don’t let your defenses down yet. Not until you’ve had a taste of the searingly raw, rowdy and wicked tune-age that The Ghost Wolves melt faces with, full-throttle and fuzzed-up. Give a listen “Gonna Live” and “Curl Up & Dye,” from the 2011 EP In Ya Neck!, and their newest release, the down ‘n’ dirty bone-cruncher of a single “Getchya Hip Thrust.” Turn the volume up.

The Ghost Wolves recently started a collaboration with legendary rock renegade (“strangely strange, oddly normal”) BP Fallon for some extraordinary musical synthesis, and created “Black Crow,” featuring Fallon on vocals and spoken word. In live performances, Fallon does an excellent rendition of BP Fallon & The Bandits‘ “Increasingly Often” with the Wolves, as well as the stunning piece “I Believe In Elvis Presley,” from Fallon’s first record, produced by Jack White in 2009 on his Third Man Records label.

That being said, you’d better not miss The Ghost Wolves with BP Fallon tonight at The Sahara Lounge, 1413 Webberville Rd. It’s a damn fine bill with rock ‘n’ rollers The Happen-Ins and Power Chief‘s musical side project River Train. Get there around 9 p.m. Recommended.

The roots of Paperhaus run deep. Not only is this a highly-revered DIY band in the Washington, DC area, they also created The Paperhaus - literally, their own home – that has been the site for many a fantastic live music show by hundreds of local and traveling artists.

Founded by guitarist and vocalist Alex Tebeleff and guitarist Eduardo Rivera, the band Paperhaus was inspired by a wide array of influences buzzing within the ears and minds of Rivera and Tebeleff at the time, everything from Radiohead to Fela Kuti. Before joining the band, bassist John Di Lascio was immersed in prog pop while drummer Brandon Moses cut his chops on raw, noisy blues. The four couldn’t be further apart as far as musical backgrounds go, but they felt a connection when they delved into some inspiring all-night jam sessions at the Red Door room in the now defunct Gold Leaf Studios. It was a surreal, experimental musical experience melding pop, blues and country with no boundaries. Paperhaus was born from an ardent passion for music and a desire to do more for the DC DIY music community, which in turn led to the development of The Paperhaus venue.

Their music is often referred to as psych-pop, which is definitely a huge part of it, but moving beyond that with elements of alt.-country, blues and funk, so many different sides yet all complimentary of one another.

Paperhaus is currently on tour to promote their forthcoming EP, Lo Hi Lo, due for release on May 28. This includes a stop in Austin for a show tonight at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St. Paperhaus will be joined by two fantastic local artists on the bill: Songwriter Jack Wilson and quartet Reservations. Doors open at 9 p.m. Surely one not to miss. Recommended.

Friends had been raving to me about the quirky catchiness of indie rock-pop outfit Driver F, and they were absolutely right on the mark. Is there such a thing as intensely awesome? That also describes their live performances, by the way. But for guitarist and vocalist Andy Lane, there was even more to expand on, which led to his next project, Grand Child.

It’s easy to initially describe Grand Child as folk pop, but their 2011 EPs, My Legs Are In the Water and follow-up My Head Is In the Clouds, go everywhere across the map. The tracks are not fenced in by any particular genre, moving flawlessly through psych, country, bits of bluegrass and orchestral pop – for starters. Basically, it’s beautiful music.

All the more reason you should make time to see Grand Child perform tonight at the perfect spot, Cheer Up Charlie’s, 1104 E. 6th St. They’ll be joined by Tender Touch, the musical side project of Walker Lukens and Drew Brunetti, and musician/writer/director Jack Gibson‘s folk rock band Tenlons Fort. The music starts at 10 p.m. Recommended.

Despite the detailed decision-making within the recording process of Brooklyn band Beach Fossils‘ 2012 full-length Clash the Truth, the basic formula was simple: Record the drums and bass live, in the same room, and get Ben Greenberg of The Men to produce the album. Next to recording lo-fi in a bedroom or basement, especially if you’re kicking things up a notch in the production quality, what could be as raw and spontaneous? Songwriter and front man Dustin Payseur had a method for his madness, and the results are as energized and driven as the vibe the band produces so naturally on stage.

Beach Fossils began in 2009 as Payseur’s solo project, and early on the band had developed a reputation for high-energy live performances that could sway even the most too-cool-for-school indie crowds. That kind of intensity fascinated Payseur, and he wanted to somehow capture that immediacy and potency on Clash the Truth. And, while the album is hardly a punk record (some would say post-punk), there are similarities in the pacing and the dynamic.

Beach Fossils will be in town for a show Wednesday night at Red 7, 611 E. 7th St. This is a damn fine bill, if I do say so myself, featuring post-punk wolf-pack Foreign Mothers and psych-groove brain-disintegrating rockers Low Times. Delish. Doors open at 9 p.m. Do not miss out, and pick up a copy of Clash the Truth while you’re at it. Recommended.

Yes, this is the very thing that makes your humble Austin Music Minute maven swoon. It’s that beloved triple bill, all local talent gracing the stage of the newly-relocated Antone’s, 2015 E. Riverside Dr. Tonight’s show is an absolute guaranteed winner. Check ‘em all out:

- Just for the record: Cari Palazzolo is one of my musical heroes here in town, hands down. One of the best. On top of that, having great talents like Matt Simon and Jason Chronis in the picture makes the music even more awesome. Belaire creates ultra-mega pop soundscapes on a cinematic scale. No exaggeration. This is music for the soundtrack to the IFC film in your brain.

- They began as a trio. But I, along with songwriter/vocalist Taylor Wilkins, declared that adding vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sara Houser was the best thing that happened to this band. Presenting badass melodic pop rock by local quartet The Couch.

- After various name and line-up changes, this band remains one of my favorites, absolutely an underrated talent. Incredible folk-rock by local outfit MARYANN. Download a copy of Outlaw Opry Act 1, then thank me later.

Doors open at 8 p.m., and the music begins at 9 p.m. Get there nice and early to catch each of these bands. Seriously. Recommended.

I’ve had so much fun with songwriter/guitarist/mysterious dude Mrs. Glass. Too much, perhaps. Your humble Austin Music Minute maven cannot help herself. I love the music, and, as is often the case with someone cursed with a dork’s sense of humor, every single opportunity to chide Mrs. Glass about his name will be taken advantage of. Because I’m a weasel. From my big-mouthed wisecracks across the room (“Oooo, where’s your husband at missus? You gonna iron my shirts, missus??”) to the now notorious John Aielli quote from a Studio 1A performance (“Mrs. Glass is the ugliest woman I’ve ever seen, but she makes the most beautiful music!”), it’s all a field day for yours truly.

But tonight, Mrs. Glass and his partners in crime, drummer Ian Fry and bassist Ivan Evangelista, will be the shining stars in the spotlight for something very cool and exciting. The guys will be filming a live music video at their esteemed and widely-loved place of musical residency, The White Horse, 500 Comal St. And they’re inviting all their friends and fans out to be a part of the party. Local filmmaker Tyson Zoltan, who’s worked with bands like East Cameron Folkcore and Bridge Farmers, will be behind the camera to capture all the blackmail material – I mean, video gold.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Get there early for a lovely happy hour with The Tea Merchants at 7 p.m. That should cure you of any camera shyness. Then after the shoot, stick around for jams by Ramsay Midwood at midnight. Recommended.

It was over five years ago when James Mays came up with the idea. Having had a lot of experience as a musician, music instructor, founder of the Band Aid School of Music, and a former Assistant Production Manager for SXSW Music who initiated SXSW Underage, it only seemed natural to take what he knew and it pass on to the future generation of musicians after him. But it had to be something fun, something that would give back to the community. It had to fit the Austin state of mind. From all this came the creation of The Kids Are Alright Fest.

Mays started TKAA, launched at the original Emo’s location, with the help of some of his music students. The festival was organized exclusively for teens to show off their musical talent while having fun at the same time, but it very quickly expanded to include fundraising for local non-profit organizations supporting various causes, and the promotion of local businesses. The bottom line: Inspire future generations to become innovators while caring for the community.

Of course, having fun is also top priority. Aside from live music and teen band competitions, the fest also includes activities and networking for skaters, gamers and extreme athletes.

This year, TKAA is happening Saturday, April 6 at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. and the band competition starting at noon. Following the awards ceremony, there will be loads of great live music by some familiar faces in the local scene: Residual Kid at 6 p.m., Holiday at 8 p.m., Once Per Axis at 8:40 p.m., Les Rav at 9 p.m., Befriend the Bears at 9:40 p.m., Cartright at 10 p.m., The Sour Notes at 10:40 p.m., Marmalakes at 11 p.m. and Soup at midnight.

Bring the family for the daytime events. Then the grown-ups can enjoy the nighttime shows. And this year’s fest benefits The Conscious Rider Center for Equine Therapy, which works with children diagnosed with autism through horseback riding therapy.

I’d first heard of The Hi-Tones a few years back, and was always struck by their psych-pop sound, sort of vintage groovy garage with hints of Bowie and early Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett. That’s what it reminded me of. And never a dull live performance.

I thought the band broke up, but fortunately, it’s more of a rebirth that took place. They are now known as Obscured By Echoes, featuring founding member and front man Johnny Flores. The band has expanded its sound toward a richer and darker psych rock style, as you’ll hear on last year’s full-length release, Black Matter Manifesto. It’s a kind of refinement of their classic signature pop immersed in haunted, reverbed, slightly warped and off-center melodies.

Do not miss Obscured By Echoes at their show Wednesday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, with the progressively “trans-genre” experimental quartet Halaska, and trippy prog Zappa-esque trio Whiteman Dancing on the bill. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.

You can rock an acoustic show. The Austin Music Minute has reminded you of this before. The proof? The Austin Steamers, a local quartet slinging some mighty solid original and traditional music on guitar, banjo, mandolin and stand-up bass. And remember, I’m always emphasizing those two key ingredients essential to their live shows: 1.) Finger-picking that often charts off into lightning speeds, and 2.) Plenty of vocal harmonies in those sweet melodies.

The Austin Steamers continue their residency at the Hole In the Wall, 2538 Guadalupe, with a show tonight. They have a couple of special guests on the bill that you need to check out: Real-deal country action from resident badass Robert Banta, and all the way from Seattle, country/folk outfit Zoe Muth & The Lost High Rollers. The music gets started at around 8 p.m. It’d do you good to soak all of this in. Recommended.

The most I could decipher from the mystery that is Slow Magic - it struck me as mysterious, in some ways – was that it was a one-man show, a single performer with synth and a drum, concealed behind a psychedelically-colored fox mask. It struck me as shamanistic, ritualistic, just imagining those moments when Slow Magic steps down from the stage into the already mesmerized audience to continue the beats.

The Austin Music Minute wholeheartedly abides by a number one rule: It’s better not to become too immersed with specific musical genres. Using too many to describe a music artist tends to be narrowing. However, in Slow Magic’s case, the “glo-fi” description seems to compliment the style: A glowing, luminescent ebb and flow of sound-and-dance beats, melding into a misty, otherworldly dream-pop effervescence.

True, not much is known about the mind behind Slow Magic’s manifestation, except, at the very least, a rather cryptic one-sentence semi-bio explaining that Slow Magic is, “Music by your imaginary friend.” Well step aside, Drop Dead Fred. Slow Magic lures the head-bobbing crowds into the folds of quite fluid, continuous, mesmerizing soundscapes.

Don’t miss Slow Magic perform tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the inside stage. Starting out the evening is Austin-based electronic-experimental trip-hoppers Corduroi. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
