KUTX 98.9 Helps Listeners Discover New Music and Experience the Best of SXSW 2013

AUSTIN, Texas—March 7, 2013—KUTX 98.9, The Austin Music Experience, will be the go-to source for the Austin and South by Southwest Music experience leading up to and during the annual music conference March 12-16.

KUTX 98.9 is producing SXSW-centric content, including exclusive news updates, artist profiles, interviews and news features, which also can be heard on sister station KUT 90.5, during “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered,” and local news segments throughout the day.

KUTX.org will be music fans’ go-to source for musical discovery – from behind-the-scenes images and photo essays, to exclusive video from select SXSW venues, streaming of NPR Music’s Stubbs Showcase, and free downloads of the SXSW Song of the Day. The Ones to Watch
Monday-Friday, March 4-March 10
The Texas Music Matters team is spotlighting seven SXSW up-and-comers. These profiles are online and airing daily on KUTX 98.9 at 6:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday, and on KUT 90.5 at 9:35 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 7:34 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Texas Music Matters’ “The List”
Friday, March 8
Texas Music Matters brings together some of public radio’s most respected music tastemakers—Jason Bentley of KCRW Santa Monica, Rita Houston of WFUV New York, David Safar of the Twin Cities’ The Current and KUTX’s Matt Reilly — to share their top picks for SXSW Music. The result is The List: 12 must-see showcases at SXSW 2013. The List can be heard during Texas Music Matters Friday at noon and 11 p.m. and again Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. on KUT 90.5.

The 2013 Austin Aces
Monday-Friday, March 11-15
Music host Jody Denberg shines the spotlight on 2013′s five Austin Aces, KUTX’s annual who’s who list of the most respected established musicians on the Austin scene. Past Austin Aces have included Marcia Ball, Steve Bruton, Cindy Cashdollar, Patti Griffin, David Grisson, Lloyd Maines and Charlie Sexton, among others. These stories will be available online and can be heard on KUTX 98.9 Monday, March 11, through Friday, March 15, at 6:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and 6:30 p.m., and on KUT 90.5 March 11 through March 15 at 6:33 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 8:04 p.m.

SXSW Song of the Day
Monday-Friday, March 11-15
KUTX’s Song of the Day feature will showcase SXSW artists exclusively throughout the week. These spotlights can be heard Monday through Friday at 8:55 a.m., 12:55 p.m. and 4:55 p.m. Each KUTX Song of the Day is available as a free download.

KUTX Live at the Four Seasons
Wednesday-Saturday, March 13-16
KUTX showcases 16 of the SXSW Music Festival’s most anticipated artists with four early-morning concerts featuring four artists playing 25-minute sets. This event is open to the public on a first-come, first served basis; no badges or wristbands are required. Admission is $10 per day, which includes a breakfast taco, granola bar and unlimited coffee. All proceeds benefit the Seton Shivers Cancer Center. Shows start at 7 a.m. Wednesday through Friday, and at 8 a.m. Saturday. Scheduled artists include: Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, The James Hunter Six, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Robyn Hitchcock, Frightened Rabbit, Josh Ritter, Lianne La Havas, and True Believers. The Austin Chronicle Austin Music Awards
Wednesday, March 13
KUTX 98.9 is a sponsor of the 31st annual Austin Music Awards where the winners of the annual Austin Chronicle Music Poll will be announced, followed by a music showcase featuring Ben Kweller, The Trishas, Bill Carter, Brownout and an all-star tribute to the late Brent Grulke of SXSW with the Wild Seeds starring Robyn Hitchcock, Alejandro Escovedo, Susan Cowsill, Britt Daniel and Adrian Quesada. NPR Music Presents SXSW Showcase Live from Stubbs
Wednesday, March 13
While admission to this event is limited to badge holders, KUTX 98.9 will air a live broadcast on 98.9 and stream the audio on kutx.org. This opening concert features Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Café Tacvba, Alt-J and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The concert, broadcast and stream begin at 7 p.m.

KUTX and SXSJ
Thursday, March 14
KUTX is partnering with Hotel San Jose for “South By San Jose,” in Joe’s Coffee parking lot on South Congress from noon to 7 p.m. Fans will enjoy performances from Hayden, Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers, Tom O’Dell, Diego Garcia, Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison, Billy Joe Shaver, and
Sergio Mendoza y La Orkestra. This event is free and open to the public.

NPR Music’s Alt.Latino Auditorium Shores Showcase
Thursday, March 14
KUTX Horizontes and Global Grooves host Michael Crockett will co-host, along with the founders of Alt.Latino, a showcase headlined by Café Tacvba with Molotov and Bajofondo. This event is free and open to the public, and begins at 4 p.m.

SXSW Public Radio Day Stage
Friday, March 15
KUTX and four of public radios’ most influential public radio music stations — The Current (Twin Cities), WXPN (Philadelphia), WFUV (New York), and KXT (Dallas) — will present a special showcase and live radio broadcast and webcast from the SXSW Radio Day Stage at the Austin Convention Center. The live concert and broadcast start at noon and will feature performances by Charles Bradley, Dawes, Divine Fits, Emmylou Harris with Rodney Crowell, Iron & Wine, Pickwick and Vampire Weekend. KUTX 98.9 will provide listeners with opportunities to win passes to attend the show.
