Austin’s ban on some single-use bags goes into effect in just over three weeks. Today, area businesses will get training on the new bag rules.

The city is holding two training sessions for restaurants, grocery stores and retail stores: one this morning, and another one at 6 p.m.

Starting March 1, businesses may only provide reusable bags. Exceptions include laundry bags and bags used inside a grocery store, like for produce or raw meats. A full list of exceptions is listed on the city’s website.

The ordinance doesn’t ban all paper or plastic bags. But it does set specific requirements for what bagging options retailers can provide. Customers will be able to bring their own bags (just keep them bacteria-free), or retailers can provide reusable bags.
