Poor Shadows of Elysium is a new Austin theater company specializing in faithful stagings of the plays of the English Renaissance. Their debut show is Richard II, one of Shakespeare’s histories that the company feels is underperformed.
While the production is true to the text of the play and staged in a traditional manner, there is one unusual twist: the lead roles of Richard and Bolingbroke will be played by Kevin Gates and Aaron Black, but who will play whom each night will be decided by an onstage coin flip before the performance.
In a perfect fit, Richard II is being performed at the Curtain Theatre, the scale replica Elizabethan theater built by Richard Garriott on the banks of Lake Austin.
