These are whirlwind times for local band Ola Podrida. Band founder and songwriter David Wingo has been working on a number of film soundtracks, including a collaboration with Raphael Saadiq for The Sitter, with Memphis sextet Lucero for the Matthew McConaughey/Reese Witherspoon feature Mud, and with Explosions In the Sky for Prince Avalanche, starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

But making soundtracks is not a new thing for Wingo. He started Ola Podrida as a sort of side-solo project, apart from his work as a composer. When he moved to New York City in 2006, the project evolved into a band that included some of his Texas friends. While in New York, Ola Podrida had amazing opportunities to play shows with Fleet Foxes, Beach House, She & Him, Blitzen Trapper, and several other great bands. The big coup was snagging a spot in the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in the UK, curated by Explosions In the Sky. Then Wingo returned to Austin in 2009, and continued writing for the band. The current line-up (Wingo, Colin SwietekMatt Clark and David Hobizal) just completed a new album, Ghosts Go Blind, set for release in April 2013.

You’ll get a special preview of the new tracks when Ola Podrida plays tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River. The bill includes performances by A.D. Blood and My Golden Calf. A splendid triple bill, indeed. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
