Judge Orders Holiday Charity to Close

December 5, 2012 5:50 pm by: Nathan Bernier

A Travis County judge has ordered the Austin and Travis County Christmas Bureau to shut down. The Christmas Bureau helped Austin police raise money for the needy for 25 years, but last week it became the subject of a criminal investigation.

The Texas attorney general’s office says the Christmas Bureau illegally solicited charitable donations and misappropriated the funds intended for low-income families in Central Texas.

The head of the non-profit, Shon Washington, took over last year following the death of the Christmas Bureau’s longtime president Alma Cruz.
