Pardon my enthusiasm, but here’s reason one-thousand, four hundred and seventy-five why Austin is so great: We have our house parties, our aftershows, and our jams. The local music peeps know exactly what I’m raving about. At any given time, at practically any location, musicians will select their gear of choice and meet up to play whatever comes to mind, and maybe run ideas by each other. It’s spontaneous and all levels of awesome. Today’s Austin Music Minute is sort of about a jam, a special one for a great cause. While it may not be as spontaneous, there will be no shortage of fun and good vibes, all about representin’ the Health Alliance For Austin Musicians (HAAM).

The Holiday HAAM Jam started out as a simple idea, basically a handful of songwriters and musicians contributing their talent to a party/show supporting HAAM, a local nonprofit providing access to affordable health care for Austin’s low income, uninsured working musicians. Like any great idea, it blossomed into something bigger – an entire album featuring all sorts of artists performing holiday tracks. Last year, Volume 1 of the Holiday HAAM Jam benefit CD raised $10,000 in just two weeks. The goal is more than twice that amount this year , but judging by the talent on Volume 2, it’s totally achievable!

Check it out: Guy Forsyth, Paula Nelson, Graham Wilkinson, Asleep At the Wheel, Jimmy LaFave, The Invincible Czars, the White Ghost Shivers, KUT‘s very own Jody Denberg playing with Brannen Temple, and so many more. Hey – even Clint Black has a track on this one. And keep in mind that every single bit of  talent, time and materials that went into making and promoting this album was all donated.

There’s a huge Holiday HAAM Jam benefit show goin’ down tonight at Antone’s, 213 W. 5th St. Get there early – doors open at 7:30 p.m. The line-up is a doozy:
