Checking Trial Lawyers’ Contributions
It’s not news that so-called personal-injury trial lawyers have been key Democratic supporters. But a spokeswoman for Texans for Lawsuit Reform said specifically that trial lawyers have accounted for more than 80 percent of the Texas Democratic Party’s donations for more than a decade. KUT’s Emily Donahue spoke with Gardner Selby of the Austin American- Statesman’s PolitiFact Texas about the assertion.
The total donations totaled $14 million from these kinds of interests. A little over a third, $5 million, came from a single group; that was the Texas Democratic Trust, which was an effort steered by the late Fred Baron of Dallas.
