Austin police say they’ve arrested more than 200 drivers for DWI this year who are under the age of 21 — in other words, not old enough to legally drink.

The department is now targeting underage drinkers for an anti-drinking and driving campaign. The department is joining a Travis County effort, called the Underage Drinking Prevention Program, to discourage drivers under 21 from drinking.

“It is the holiday season and the ramifications are not worth it,” said program director Gloria Souhami. “It is also illegal for those under 21 to drink. We want everyone to have a great time but not to break the law.”

According the federal government, traffic fatalities are the No. 1 cause of death among teens.
