This damn good band still brings all the ‘groovy’ to the party. No spot on the dance floor is left open when The Ugly Beats are in the house.
The Austin-based quintet, fronted by songwriter and vocalist Joe Emry, first got together in 2003 and amassed a collection of high-octane original tracks and a list of their favorite obscure songs for playing at gigs. The band produced two fantastic full-length releases – their debut, Bring On the Beats, followed by the equally contagious Take A Stand with The Ugly Beats, both on the Get Hip Recordings label. Then along came the release of Motor! (2010), another pop/rock treasure that could have easily be mistaken for something recorded in the ’60s.
Once again, this is living proof that when a band does it well, they can keep it all sounding timeless. The Ugly Beats are all about major power pop and rock, crossing classic garage sounds with British invasion. Always melodic and always initiating the dance party.
If you haven’t seen them live yet, make plans to do so. The Ugly Beats play tonight at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress Ave. Southern CA garage rockers Vicky & The Vengents start the night out at 10 p.m., then the Beats take the stage at midnight. Recommended. Soak in all the grooviness.
