The Calm Blue Sea @ KUT 11/13/12

November 12, 2012 10:06 am by: Reid O'Conor

The Calm Blue Sea’s lushly textured sound is a study in contrast. The Austin band’s music, like its oceanic name, is at once beautiful and violent, transcendent and triumphant. The idea that their tunes are purely instrumental tunes maybe a turn-off to some, but within one listen, minds are always changed. With songs structured by minutes rather than measures, the foursome marries post-rock fugues with classically-inspired arrangements, the aggression and heaviness of metal, the artiness of indie rock and the widescreen expanse of a film score. The end result is stunning. The Calm Blue Sea’s new album, Arrivals & Departures, came out last month and this week they’ve got two Texas shows with The Twilight Sad and Errors, bringing them to Red 7 tomorrow night. The Calm Blue Sea performed live for us in Studio 1a and you can listen to it RIGHT HERE!
