On this edition of In Black America, producer/host John L. Hanson Jr. speaks with Eve Wright Taylor, Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the National Basketball Association’s Miami HEAT. Taylor has never been the kind of woman to wait for opportunities—in business or in her personal life. This big picture-thinking, calculated risk-taking executive learned the hard way that, with her goals, she would have to create opportunities rather than wait for them.

It’s a philosophy that’s navigated her successful career in one of the most male-dominated industries in the world— professional sports. And she did it without compromising her personal style or femininity.

Taylor hadn’t even reached 35 when she earned a top spot as Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the Miami HEAT— arguably the hottest professional sports franchise in the world. She is a relatively young executive who’s enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of Corporate America and the professional sports world. To get there, she had to focus her efforts on pursuing her passions the focus of her efforts, not some nebulous, pre-determined definition of success.

But, Taylor realizes this philosophy is a lot easier to talk about than it is to walk out. That’s why, at the top of her “game,” she’s taking time to coach, mentor, inspire and activate other professionals—male and female, alike—with the game-changing insight that made all the difference for her: that passion is the true measure of success. Taylor helps leaders and young professionals assess their career track and understand how their personal lives and passions ultimately determine how, if, they will ever realize “success.”

Taylor began her professional career at corporate law firms. Her career in the sports industry began at the LPGA, where she served as the senior director of Business Affairs. As senior director, she developed sports marketing opportunities for corporate sponsors to leverage their affiliation with the LPGA in order to reach target markets; presented strategies to facilitate golf association relationships; and identified strategic brand extension and revenue generation opportunities.
