People thought I was showing disrespect with my remark, but I genuinely was not. Danny Malone will back me up on this one: He does, indeed, reside on a planet of his own making. He’s said so himself. I would go so far as to say his own universe.

I continued to remain intrigued although a bit of time had passed since his last live performance, his last music release. He quietly kept himself beneath the radar for some much-needed introspection. New music was lingering on the horizon. It was just a matter of when it would see the light of day. Or not.

Little did I know he had ventured off, at some point, to record this new music within the hallowed halls of a 15th century castle in Denmark. You know. No biggie.

And now, the Austin-based songwriter emerges with a solid new album, Balloons. It’s no exaggeration to proclaim each and every track in this collection is an artfully assembled piece of work, haunted, mysterious and melodic; tormented on certain levels, but hardly consumed by darkness; at times accented by hushed breaths paired with click beats. It is, by far, his best work to date.

Danny Malone will present a special pre-release show Saturday night at Stubb’s indoor venue, 801 Red River. This will surely be a must-see performance, complete with orchestra and who-knows-what, courtesy of Malone’s imaginative finesse. The man knows how to put on a show. The bill includes The Roosevelts and Laty. Doors open at 9 p.m. Don’t forget to get your own copy of the new album, as well. Recommended.
