Capitol to Get Vietnam Vets Memorial

November 12, 2012 4:19 pm by: Kelly Connelly

A new memorial is coming the Texas Capitol grounds in 2013.  The sculpture will honor both Texas veterans and the diversity of Texas troops.

The Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument will portray five men of different ethnicities on a daily patrol.

“We’re having 3,415 dog tags engraved that will have the names of Texans who died as a result of the war in Vietnam,” said Robert Floyd, a Vietnam veteran and chairman of the monument committee. “Those tags will later be entombed in the monument. We believe that this site on the Capitol grounds will indeed be hallowed ground.”

Floyd says plans have been in the works since 2003. Funding for the initial work and maintenance comes largely from private donations and the Texas Historical Commission.
