Discovery is half the fun of being a music fan. A short blog post here, a stray tweet there can mean the difference between a band you’ve never heard of and your new favorite. In order to better serve your musical exploration, we bring you Thumpers, a new London-based duo with nary a record out, but a big pop sound explosion ready-made to be your new favorite.
When we say Thumpers is new, we really mean new. After hearing the song a few weeks back, we contacted Thumpers about a possible song of the day. They couldn’t give us an answer right then, because they were gearing up for their first live gig that very night. And who are the two fellas behind the band? They are Marcus Pepperell and John Hamson Jr. The pair have been friends since childhood, and played together in the indie-rock trio Pull Tiger Tail. That group issued their last record in 2009, and Hamson left to join Noah and the Whale for a time.
Now Hamson and Pepperell are back together as Thumpers. They might not have a record out, but Thumpers’ song “Sound of Screams” has been winding its way around the blogosphere. If indie-pop could have a dictionary definition, one of the footnotes would point to this tune. The song has big–well–thumping rhythms, swirly synths and a chorus that you just can’t help but sing along to. It’s catchy, and it’s just a preview on what may come next from this new band.
