One of the themes of this here Song of the Day feature is discovery. Every weekday we try to bring you something that’s got our ears all perked up. It may be something new, old, strange or classic. But there’s little that usually slips past us. So when we get to discover something and bring it to you, dear listener/reader, it’s a special thing. This writer got to experience that something special a few weeks ago during a muddy–but very, very magical–weekend when Mexico’s The Plastics Revolution took the stage at UTOPiAfest.
The band is composed of six childhood friends from Mexico City. They first got together back in 2007, and released their first LP two years later. The Plastics Revolution first piqued my interest when I saw them in a video jamming with mariachis on a boat on a canal in their hometown. The song felt intimate, and the band seemed like they were having a whale of a time. An impromptu, open-air jam here in Austin during last year’s SXSW actually brought The Plastics Revolution to the attention of the folks at UTOPiAFest. That brings us to a few Saturdays ago. The ground was still a little soft from the unrelenting rain the day before. But the festival crowd was ebullient, dancing in the sticky Hill Country mud as The Plastics Revolution ripped into a joyful set that even included a great Talking Heads cover.
Chances are it may take a while for The Plastics Revolution to come back ’round to Texas, but rest ye worried minds, because the band have a new record out (that I have on good authority you can pick up at Waterloo this week) called, intriguingly, King Bono VS Los Flight Simulators. The album is split pretty evenly with songs in Spanish and English. One of the latter is today’s song of the day “Fun In The Sun.” It’s a mellower tune that rides a perky bassline. There’s atmosphere to spare, and hopefully it’ll spur you to discover a little more from this great band.
As a bonus for today’s song of the day, we also have my interview with The Plastics Revolution recorded live at UTOPiAfest. We’re all about added value here at KUT.
