It is a most profound experience to listen to Put Your Back N 2 It, the second album from songwriter Mike Hadreas‘ musical project Perfume Genius.
Hadreas is an open book. His lyrics paint powerful, sometimes surreal, oftentimes painful images. He is open about his sexuality, and has no apologies for wearing his heart on his sleeve. But there’s no pity party going on here. Instead, you pick up a clear feeling of empathy, a stirring voice for those who agonize over their own inner turmoil.
Hadreas creates big, rather intense soundscapes with very minimal composition. For the most part, he takes a simpler approach in his arrangements, even if, at times, they rise into something orchestral or dramatic. But the tone throughout remains fragile, vulnerable, and unflinchingly honest.
Perfume Genius will perform tonight at Central Presbyterian Church, 200 E. 8th St., with the Brian Borcherdt/Leon Taheny Toronto-based duo Dusted starting out the evening. Doors open early at 7 p.m. Recommended.
