You always think it’s so very far away, and then it creeps up on you. Before you know it, BAM. It’s here. The Austin City Limits Music Festival is this weekend at Zilker Park, so it’s a weekend chock full of endless live music on several stages, followed by all the nighttime afterparty gigs that send you reeling. If you’re not a zombie by the end of it all, then more power to you.

The fest starts Friday, but I’ve got news for you – you need to make some time for the pre-ACL celebrations. And that’s what I’m recommending on today’s Austin Music Minute, an official ACL pre-show with two fantastic local bands and one self-described “flower punk” band that’s playing at the festival. It’s all going down at a major party featuring Atlanta-based garage-y/punk hoodlums The Black Lips, local dynamic duo/stage-blazin’ rock gods Not In the Face!, and local beer-drenched/Stooges-influenced, lo-fi musical creatures A Giant Dog. They all play tonight at Antone’s, 213 W. 5th St. Doors open at 8 p.m. This one’s bound to get loud and rowdy. Go for it.

You can also visit ACL’s website for a list of other pre-fest shows that feature Laura Marling, Alabama Shakes and Lee Fields & The Expressions, Band of Skulls (one of my favorites), Wild Child, and The Soul Rebels. Something for everybody.
