Construction began yesterday on an additional security checkpoint at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, where security lines can get really long, especially during holidays and special events.
ABIA spokesman Jason Zielinski says big events are part of the equation but are not the only reason for the new security checkpoint.
“The airport has been experiencing growth for 31 consecutive months, so this has been a need that’s already been taking place,” Zielinski said. “But yes, certainly in November with Formula One and the extra special events that will be coming, we do anticipate an increase in passenger traffic. This will certainly help facilitate those passengers.”
The checkpoint is a temporary addition and should be open by mid-November. A permanent checkpoint is expected to be completed in 2015.
