Austin Music Map: Top Hat Recording

October 18, 2012 4:45 pm by: Delaney Hall

KUT’s Texas Music Matters is partnering with the national Localore initiative to create the Austin Music Map: a yearlong effort to go beyond the well-traveled streets of the Austin music scene in search of the hidden places where music is being made. We want your help discovering and documenting these places. To find out how to get involved, visit the Austin Music Map website or call our hotline with stories and tips: (512) 861-8266.

Jon Dee Graham calls himself the Mayor of South Austin. He’s been a musician for decades, performing with The Skunks and the True Believers back in the 1980s, and playing with everyone from John Doe to Kelly Willis since then.

Today he takes the Austin Music Map to one of his favorite places—a hidden studio called Top Hat Recording where he recorded his most recent album in a freewheeling collaboration with Top Hat co-owners John Harvey and Mary Podio.
