AISD District 3: Incumbent Stands Aside

KUT was planning to profile the Austin school board race in District 3, which covers parts of North Austin and the Mueller development. But the incumbent in the race, Christine Brister, has suspended her campaign. She has said it’s because of health issues that are serious but not life-threatening.
That means the race has been virtually surrendered to retired teacher Ann Teich.
“I am concerned, of course, about the needs of District 3,” Teich said. “We have a lot of kids in that area, a very densely packed area in District 3. A lot of kids with a lot of challenges, and I want to make sure their needs are met also. But we also have a lot of those same needs around the district. I think the district has some great teachers and some great staff, and we need to work to retain that staff, especially in our schools where there are a lot of challenges.”
But even though her opponent dropped out, Teich still some work to do: Brister’s name will still appear on the ballot.
Again, early voting starts Monday, and Election Day is Nov. 6.
